The trophies keep coming for Ruben Dias in a quite brilliant debut season at Manchester City.

Already a Carabao Cup and Premier League winner, Dias, 24, has been named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for the 2020/21 season.

Signed for £60m two games into the season, after City had just conceded five times against Leicester, Dias immediately slotted into a shaky defence and shored up the back-line. After striking up a formidable partnership with John Stones, the pair helped City on their incredible winning run from December to March, with the Blues boasting the best defensive record in the Premier League.

Dias’ instant impact on the whole City team has been likened to Virgil van Dijk’s performances at Liverpool, and his form has now been recognised in the first of the end-of-season awards to be handed out.

Last year, Jordan Henderson was the winner for his fine performances as Liverpool won the title, along with his leadership off the field during the first lockdown. Raheem Sterling was the winner in 2019, ending a 50-year wait for a City player to be awarded the FWA accolade.
